Scope of Work:

The Developmental Metalsmith will provide support to NASA’s sounding rocket experiments.



  • Responsible to plan, layout, fabricate, assemble, install, and repair sheet metal parts, equipment, and products utilizing knowledge of working characteristics metallic and nonmetallic materials, machining, and layout techniques, using hand tools, power tools, machines, and equipment
  • Read and interpret prints, sketches, or product specifications to determine sequence and methods of fabricating, assembling, and installing sheet metal products
  • Responsible to select gauge and type of sheet metal, such as galvanized iron, copper, steel, or aluminum, or nonmetallic material such as plastics or fiberglass according to product specifications
  • Fabricate, modify, repair, assemble, and install sheet metal and plastic parts, items, and assemblies
  • Work requires close precision and highly complex aerospace quality hardware
  • Perform experimental and unique tasks. Tasks are assigned or written or oral instructions, prints, sketches, or personal inspection of items to be manufactured or repaired
  • Utilizes knowledge of metal and material treatment and of the capabilities of the section in suggesting or deciding metals, alloys, or materials for modifications or complete projects
  • Perform precision riveting per military standards are nondestructive testing
  • Perform other related duties as assigned or required


Minimum Requirements:

  • Minimum 4 years of general experience with 2 years in a machine shop environment or a total of 6 years of general experience in a production machine shop environment. 
  • Trade school or military training 
  • Possess ability to develop patterns and layouts, some of which may be complex requiring close precision from written or oral instruction, prints, sketches, or inspection
  • Knowledge to operate complex hand tools and large power tools associated with the trade and metal and material treatment needed to determine materials required for projects
  • Ability to perform precision riveting and non‐destructive testing
  • Training or certification in the following may be required:
    1. Crane Operator Certification per NASA‐STD‐8719.9 w/Change 2 & NPR 8715.3C
    2. Dye Penetrant Testing 
    3. Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) Control per GPR 8730.6A
    4. Forklift Operator Certification per GPR 8719.1B
    5. General Safety Awareness, IT Security, Environmental Compliance, and Personnel Safety and Health
    6. Hazardous Materials Handlers (see Safety and Health Plan)
    7. High Pressure Operations per GSFC/WFF 800‐PG‐8715.0.4A
    8. Mate / Demate per NASA‐STD‐8739.4 w/Change 6
